Recommendations

Smile design is a sub-branch of aesthetic dentistry and aims to create a smile that is appropriate to the person’s face shape, gender, age, and personal preferences. This process is customized according to the individual’s both aesthetic and functional needs. Smile design is a natural three-dimensional design that is compatible with the closure between the upper and lower teeth, the soft tissue surrounding the teeth, and the patient’s facial characteristics.

The aim of the ideal smile design is to provide aesthetics with the most conservative approach possible, that is, with minimal touch on the tooth structures. This smile we create should be both aesthetically and functionally functional. Our duty as a dentist is to provide the best aesthetics in our patients with careful diagnosis, analysis and treatment.

An indispensable element of a perfect smile design is that the tissues surrounding the teeth have a healthy structure. An ideal smile design cannot be created with atrophied papilla (the gum between two teeth), asymmetric gum levels, and excessively hyperplastic edematous gums.

Smile Design Planning Process

Patient Evaluation: Photographs, x-rays and intraoral scans are taken.

Aesthetic Analysis: Facial proportions, lip line and gingival line are analyzed.

Digital Design (DSD): A virtual simulation of the smile is made before treatment with computer-aided software.

Rehearsal (Mock-up): The design is tested with temporary materials and patient approval is obtained.

Treatment Application: As a result of the examination, a treatment plan is made in line with the patient’s wishes and complaints. Treatments such as composite bonding, laminated veneer, whitening or zirconium veneer are applied.

Aesthetic Dental Restorations

Teeth Whitening (Bleaching)

Teeth whitening is an aesthetic dental treatment applied to remove discoloration, yellowing, and stains that occur on the tooth surface over time, giving it a brighter and more aesthetic appearance. The teeth whitening process aims to lighten the natural color of the teeth and give them a brighter appearance. It can be applied with in-office whitening (in the clinic) or home whitening methods. An effective result is obtained without damaging the tooth enamel using special gels and technologies.

Causes of Tooth Discoloration

Intrinsic Discolorations: Color changes in the inner structure of the tooth (dentin). It may develop due to traumas, aging, excess fluoride, and antibiotic (tetracycline) use.

Extrinsic Discolorations: Stains on the outer surface of the tooth. It occurs due to tea, coffee, cigarettes, red wine, poor oral hygiene, and food dyes.

Teeth Whitening Methods

In-Office Whitening (Professional Whitening): Applied in the clinic by the dentist. The gums are isolated with a protective gel or barrier. A high concentration whitening gel (usually 35-40% hydrogen peroxide) is applied to the teeth. The whitening process is accelerated by activating the gel with laser or LED light. Results can be obtained in a single session (30-60 minutes). 2-3 sessions can be applied if necessary.

Home Whitening: The physician prepares custom-made transparent trays by taking the patient’s tooth size. Low concentration whitening gel (usually 10-20% carbamide peroxide) is placed in these trays. The patient uses the trays for 1-2 weeks, 4-8 hours a day.

Combined Whitening: In-office and home whitening are applied together. Fast results are obtained with clinical whitening, while permanence is achieved with home whitening.

Internal Whitening (Non-vital Whitening): Applied to root canal treated, discolored and internally stained teeth. A whitening agent is placed inside the tooth and closed with a temporary filling. Tooth color is checked for 3-5 days. When the result is obtained, the tooth is closed with a permanent filling.

Things to Consider After Whitening

Colored foods and drinks should be avoided for the first 24-48 hours.

Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, acidic and abrasive drinks, and foods with sauces should be avoided.

Smoking should be limited.

Regular tooth brushing and flossing should be ensured.

Care products recommended by the dentist should be used.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Those with yellowed, stained, or dull teeth.

Those who do not have gum disease before teeth whitening.

Those who have discoloration in their root canal treated teeth.

Who Is It Not Suitable For?

Pregnant and lactating women

Individuals under the age of 16

Those with gum disease or caries problems

Those with excessive sensitivity

Whitening Results and Permanence

The effect of whitening usually lasts between 6 months and 2 years. They are also called “leaf porcelain”. It is one of the most preferred methods, especially for smile design in aesthetic dentistry.

Laminate veneers are an ideal solution for patients who want a natural and aesthetic smile. It is a popular method because it requires minimal abrasion of the teeth and offers long-lasting results.
