Zirconium Tooth Veneers

Zirconium tooth veneers are a popular option for both aesthetics and durability. It offers a more natural look compared to metal-supported tooth veneers and is generally preferred in the anterior teeth. Monolithic tooth veneers, on the other hand, are made of a single piece of zircon material and are frequently used in the posterior teeth due to their durability. Zirconium tooth veneers are ideal for patients with high aesthetic expectations and give excellent results in the anterior teeth. Monolithic zircon tooth veneers, on the other hand, stand out with their durability and are a more suitable option for the posterior teeth. Which type of veneer to choose should be determined by the dentist according to the patient’s needs, tooth structure, and expectations.

Zirconium Tooth Veneers

Zirconium tooth veneers are aesthetic tooth veneers in which a white-colored ceramic material (zirconia dioxide) with high light transmittance is used instead of metal in its infrastructure. It offers a more natural appearance compared to metal-supported porcelain and is gum-friendly because it is biocompatible. It is very close to the natural tooth appearance. Its light transmittance is high, which provides a natural and bright appearance. It is as durable as metal and shows high resistance to chewing forces. It does not cause allergic reactions and is compatible with the gums. It is resistant to discoloration such as tea, coffee, and cigarettes. It does not cause dark discoloration in the gums like metal-supported veneers. It does not create hot-cold sensitivity.

Zirconium Tooth Veneer Application Process

The shape and color of the teeth are evaluated. The teeth are abraded by 1-2 mm, as much as the amount of material to be added. Digital or classic impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory. Temporary veneers are placed to protect the prepared teeth. The patient uses temporary veneers until the permanent zirconium veneers are ready. In this way, there is no cold-hot sensitivity in the teeth, and the patient spends this period more comfortably in terms of aesthetics and gum health. The zirconium substructure is prepared. First, the substructure is tried in. If the harmony of the zirconium substructure and the teeth is good, the next stage is passed. In the laboratory, the porcelain material is aesthetically processed on the zircon substructure. After a final try-in to make sure that everything is aesthetically and functionally okay, the teeth are polished (glazed). The prepared zirconium veneers are permanently attached to the natural teeth with resin-based cements.

Advantages of Zirconium Veneers

It provides a very similar appearance to the natural tooth. It can be used safely even in the posterior teeth. It does not carry an allergy risk. It shows durability for 10-15 years. (The patient’s oral care is also important here.)

Monolithic Zirconium Tooth Veneers

Monolithic zircon tooth veneers are veneers made entirely from a single piece of zirconium. No porcelain is added on top, so it is more durable and is especially preferred in the posterior teeth where chewing forces are high. It is made of a single block of zirconium, so it is stronger than layered veneers. Monolithic restorations are preferred, especially in the posterior regions, if there is a problem with the occlusal distance, that is, if the crown height is short. It has close to the strength of metal-supported porcelain and is resistant to fractures. It is not as transparent as full porcelain, but it is aesthetically sufficient. Since no porcelain layer is added, there is no risk of abrasion, cracking, or peeling. It provides long-term durability, especially in the posterior teeth. It does not cause irritation in the gums.

Monolithic Zircon Tooth Veneer Application Process

The tooth impression is taken, and digital design is made. It is prepared by being carved from a single block of zirconium with CAD-CAM technology. The prepared veneer is polished and glued to the tooth after try-ins in the mouth.

Advantages of Monolithic Zircon Tooth Veneers

Thanks to its high strength, it is safely used in the posterior teeth. Thanks to its porcelain-free structure, there is no risk of abrasion and breakage. It does not contain metal. It is ideal especially in cases requiring durability in the posterior region. It is preferred because it is a single layer in teeth where the occlusal distance is very small and the crown height needs to be short.
