Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are a condition characterized by pain, stiffness, or other symptoms that occur in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. This problem can seriously affect the quality of daily life and may require emergency dental intervention.

Causes of TMJ Problems

  • Teeth clenching or grinding: This habit, which is done unconsciously especially during sleep, puts excessive load on the joints.
  • Jaw trauma: Jaw fractures or dislocations caused by an accident or impact can lead to TMJ disorders.
  • Wear of the joint: Aging or joint diseases can disrupt the structure of the joint and cause pain.
  • Stress: Stress can lead to muscle tension and joint problems.
  • Dental problems: Incorrectly seated teeth or missing teeth can cause problems by putting a load on the jaw joint.

Symptoms of TMJ Problems

  • Pain in the jaw joint area
  • Clicking or popping sound when opening or closing the jaw
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Swelling in the face
  • Ringing or pain in the ear
  • Headache
  • Neck pain

What Does the Emergency Dentist Do?

  • Diagnosis: The emergency dentist listens to the patient’s complaints, performs an intraoral examination, and makes a diagnosis using imaging methods (such as panoramic x-rays) when necessary.
  • Pain management: May prescribe painkillers or muscle relaxants.
  • Drug treatment: May give antibiotics in case of inflammation or infection.
  • Mouth guard: May apply a mouth guard to patients with teeth clenching or grinding habits.
  • Physical therapy: May refer you to physical therapy to relax the jaw muscles.
  • Surgery: Surgery may be required in severe cases.

When Should I See an Emergency Dentist?

  • If you have difficulty opening and closing your jaw
  • If you have severe pain or swelling in your jaw
  • If you have locking in your jaw
  • If you have ringing or pain in your ear
  • If you have numbness or tingling in your face

Prevention Methods

  • Stress management: Reduce stress with methods such as yoga and meditation.
  • Balanced diet: Consume enough protein to strengthen the jaw muscles.
  • Regular dental checkups: Have regular checkups with your dentist to diagnose dental problems early.
  • Use of a mouth guard: Use a mouth guard if you have a teeth clenching or grinding habit.

Remember: TMJ problems can be managed more easily with early diagnosis and treatment. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, it is important to see an emergency dentist without delay.

Jaw Dislocations

In case of dislocation of the jaw joint, the jaw is placed back into its place with manual techniques and stabilization is provided. If the jaw dislocates very often and easily, the jaw is prevented from opening too much by manually supporting it from under the jaw while yawning.

Especially if there is an impact to the joint area in traffic accidents, the joint area is immediately examined with an x-ray. If the joint neck is dislocated or fractured, the patient should be immediately referred to a jaw surgeon. Time is very important here. The patient is informed about the situation. Avoid eating hard food.
