Invisalign (Clear Aligner) Treatment
Invisalign treatment, also known as clear aligner therapy, is a modern orthodontic method designed to align teeth and improve occlusion. This treatment begins with taking impressions of the patient’s teeth to digitize the intraoral structures. Subsequently, a series of clear aligners are manufactured to gradually correct the teeth in stages.
These aligners are delivered in bulk to the orthodontist, who applies them to the patient in a specific order. It is mandatory for the aligners to be worn all day, except during meal times, for at least 21 hours a day. When worn consistently, each aligner is typically used for two weeks before transitioning to the next one in the series. During follow-up visits, the orthodontist performs any necessary procedures on the patient’s teeth and may provide multiple aligners at once. Patients continue their treatment by wearing the aligners as prescribed.
When comparing clear aligners to traditional braces, the most striking difference lies in aesthetics. Traditional braces (excluding porcelain brackets used for aesthetic purposes) are more noticeable in the mouth compared to clear aligners. With braces, there are specific dietary restrictions to prevent damage to the fixed attachments bonded to the teeth. However, clear aligner therapy allows patients to eat and drink whatever they desire since the aligners can be removed during meals. Traditional braces, with their metal surfaces on the front of teeth, can increase the risk of cavities in individuals with poor oral hygiene. In contrast, with clear aligners, oral hygiene is easily maintained as the aligners are removed for eating and brushing.
Although clear aligners stand out as an aesthetic and innovative technique, they require strict patient compliance. While braces, being a fixed treatment, ensure tooth movement under any circumstances, clear aligner therapy demands wearing the aligners for a minimum of 21 hours per day. Failure to adhere to this can lead to delays in the predicted treatment timeline and suboptimal tooth movements.
Currently, clear aligner therapy tends to be more expensive than traditional braces. However, as the popularity of clear aligners increases and patient demand rises, this technique is becoming more widespread. The growing number of companies offering this service may foster competition, potentially making clear aligner treatment more accessible in the coming years.
Recent studies, particularly with advancements in technology, show that orthodontic treatment with clear aligners is as fast and effective as traditional braces. In studies comparing treatment comfort, no significant differences in pain levels were found between clear aligners and braces.
Among clear aligner systems, Invisalign is the most established and widely accepted globally. Invisalign has successfully treated millions of patients and proven its effectiveness over time. Although other companies also offer clear aligner systems, I prefer the Invisalign system in my clinic. Treatment Duration for Invisalign (Clear Aligners):
The duration of treatment with clear aligners typically ranges from 6 to 24 months, depending on the severity of malocclusion, the complexity of the treatment, and the teeth’s response to movement. However, some complex cases may require a longer duration. The success of the treatment heavily depends on the patient wearing the aligners consistently for approximately 20-22 hours a day, removing them only for meals and oral hygiene practices.
